Entraygues-Le Fel, twenty hectares clinging to the slope

France has appellations nobody has heard of because they are tiny. Entraygues-Le Fel is one: around twenty hectares, about ten growers, and vines planted on narrow terraces clinging to the best-exposed slopes, the first foothills of the Cantal and the Aubrac.

Recognised as VDQS as early as 1965, the appellation obtained AOC status in November 2011.

What you drink

The reds and rosés are led by fer servadou, the local grape also called mansois, blended with cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. The whites are made from chenin, which always surprises at this latitude: sharp, taut, and a remarkable match for Aubrac cheeses.

These are growers’ wines, not cooperative wines. You will rarely find them anywhere but here, which is reason enough to take some home.

The wine route

A waymarked 50 km circuit links Entraygues-sur-Truyère to the village of Le Fel, following the slopes. It is a fine road, narrow and winding, with regular views over the valley. Allow a full day if you stop at the growers, and plan a driver.

The village of Le Fel, perched above the Lot, is also a stage on the Lot valley loop of the Lo Camin d’Olt trail, so you can walk up to it.

A season to watch

The appellation went through very difficult vintages in 2023 and 2024, with harvests close to nothing because of the weather. Some estates sell out quickly: call before making the trip.
